A cost-effective combined advanced therapy to treat knee osteoarthritis

Eventful Weeks at Reykjavik University

Over the last two months, SINPAIN partner Reykjavik University (RU) was extremely busy with presenting their results related to knee osteoarthritis classification, medical imaging and machine learning.

IEEE MetroXRAINE 2025

They started on 22-24 October 2025 with participating in the IEEE MetroXRAINE 2025 in Ancona, Italy. At the conference, Ida Maruotto presented a poster on "S-SMOTE: An Optimized Oversampling Approach for Knee Osteoarthritis Classification Using Secondary Label Analysis".

IEEE MextroSustainability 2025

On 4-5 December 2025, the RU team participated in the conference IEEE MetroSustainability 2025, hosted in Benevento, Italy. Federica Kiyomi Ciliberti gave a presentation on "Generalizable and Sustainable Feature Selection for Medical Imaging: A Case Study in Knee Osteoarthritis", within the special session "_Smart devices, biomedical technologies, and automated diagnostics for sustainable and intelligent healthcar_e".

PhD thesis defended

Last but not least, on 17 November 2025, Federica Kiyomi Ciliberti from RU successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled "Advancing Knee Osteoarthritis Assessment Using Novel Quantitative Imaging Features and Machine Learning" which is built on the work done in SINPAIN over the last few years.

Heartfelt congratulations to Federica from the entire SINPAIN consortium for this milestone in her career as a scientist. The good news: even after completion of her thesis she will be continuing on working in the SINPAIN project.
